A specific support action (SSA), Integration of Mycotoxin and Toxigenic Fungi Research for Food Safety in Global Systems – MYCOGLOBE (website: http://mycoglobe.ispa.cnr.it) has been approved by the European Commission within the Sixth Framework program. The project, coordinated by Angelo Visconti, ISPA-CNR, Italy, aims to implement the recommendations from a wide range of European research projects on mycotoxins and toxigenic fungi by supporting, stimulating, and facilitating the participation and co-operation with countries that have signed a bilateral scientific and technological cooperation agreement with the EU. Its goals include the following: (1) create a consortium of international experts in mycotoxins and toxigenic fungi; (2) identify common priorities by sharing data from the major international networks involved in research on mycotoxins and toxigenic fungi; (3) evaluate research policy in the SSA area with conferences on advanced research tools; (4) improve co-operation in the SSA area by providing training to developing countries (Africa, Asia, Latin America), and organizing workshops for sharing information with advanced third countries (the United States and Australia).
